Nuri is human.
But what else do we know?
First and foremost, "Nuri" is a designation bestowed by the Maculata. What it means in their language still remains a mystery.
Nuri's gender is ambiguous. The slave is stuck on a planet far out in an uncharted galaxy where two-legged natives are rare and in a position where the creatures around have no interest in a slave's sex. While the Maculata also walk on two legs, they do not originate in the galaxy where their predecessors chose to settle. They do however, resemble Nuri, giving the slave a discomforting reminder of Earth.
Nuri's muscles have been synthetically joined with a Maculatum species of sentient Gris Vine--a normally carnivorous plant that releases acid to digest its prey. These vines have been genetically and technologically altered to respond to particular voice and digital signatures controlled by the Maculata.
This is how they maintain absolute control over the slave population. By refusing Renewal, the only source of nutrient sustenance on Maculata, Nuri was able to starve the vines and lessen their acid production, while weakening the strength of the plant itself.
It would also appear that Nuri has a penchant for the Mistress and a relationship with her that has surpassed the regulations of Maculata law.
