Sam's original surname of Beck'ayriah actually originated with her mother's family.  Over the generations it was shortened to 'Beck' and the rest was forgotten.

Sam is a newborn telepath. Her parameters differ from the classic idea of telepathy.  Samantha doesn’t broadcast or pick up on thoughts in real time, her abilities are not quite so broadly awakened yet. Her strength lies in focused infiltration—which is ironic, considering Sam has a very short attention span. Sam is able to enter the minds of whoever she is focusing on to perceive not only thoughts, but images, memories, even reality as it happens. She hasn’t yet discovered how to protect her mind, but sometimes strength of will and desperation is plenty to get her out of a fix. She can even experience moments, fully tethered to another’s mental and emotional response. This less controlled method of losing herself seems to come more naturally to Samantha. Her raw power as a mage doesn’t come easy either, fully dependent on focus and clarity.

_______________________________________

Samantha is a confusing mix of insecurity and misplaced confidence. A social pariah in school, Sam depends on Adrianne’s reputation to protect her from non-stop bullying and even violence. Her temper however, sometimes slips out of her grip, making things worse. Immature, even for an eleven-year-old, Sam finds herself looking to the few people who are staples in her life for attention in the wake of her negligent mother and absent father. Friendship is everything to her, considering she’s had so little of it. Sam is loyal to a fault.  That loyalty is only matched by her tendency to instigate, aggravate and poke at her friends’ boundaries.

Will the circumstances surrounding Than’s delivery force Sam to grow up and find faith and security in herself? Or will her newfound power fuel spite and vengeance?
